GCE French

Introduction

The GCE A-Level in French is a UK-based qualification equivalent to pre-university level study of the French language and culture. Offered by major UK exam boards (such as AQA, Edexcel, and OCR), this two-year course develops students' linguistic proficiency while exploring Francophone literature, film, and society. While students can opt for a one-year AS Level in French, most universities require full A-Level results for entry, making the two-year course the preferred choice for serious applicants.

Content & Assessment

Language Skills Development

A-Level French builds on GCSE foundations, enhancing students' abilities in:

  • Listening & Speaking – Understanding authentic French audio (news, interviews, podcasts) and engaging in discussions on cultural and social topics.
  • Reading & Writing – Analysing articles, literary extracts, and essays while crafting structured responses in French.
  • Grammar & Vocabulary – Mastering complex grammatical structures and broadening lexical range for fluency.

Cultural & Literary Studies

Students explore:

  • Francophone Society – Topics such as family structures, education, politics, and immigration in French-speaking countries.
  • Artistic Culture – Study of French cinema, music, and traditions, often including analysis of films or literary works.
  • Literature – Some exam boards require in-depth study of French novels, plays, or poetry, encouraging critical analysis.

Independent Research Project (IRP)

A key component of the speaking exam, students research a topic of their choice related to Francophone culture, presenting and defending their findings in French.
