ESAT

What is ESAT?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a new test used by specific Oxbridge and Imperial programs to assess a candidate’s ability and potential to excel in their courses. The ESAT has replaced the previous ENGAA and NSAA tests.

Programmes that require ESAT includes:
  1. University of Cambridge
    • Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology
    • Engineering
    • Natural Sciences
    • Veterinary Medicine
  2. Imperial College London
    • Specific Engineering programmes
    • Physics

Test format

ESAT is made up of individual multiple-choice assessments, including:

  • Mathematics 1 (compulsory)
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics 2

Apart from Mathematics 1, which is compulsory for all candidates, each candidate will complete two additional multiple-choice assessments depending on which course you are applying to. For example, if you are applying for Engineering, you will likely complete Physics and Mathematics 2.

Details about the test format and specification will be updated later in the year. Check the ESAT website regularly for the latest updates.

When is ESAT and when do I register?

ESAT is taken in mid October and you can register for the test from August to mid September.

When should I prepare for ESAT?

The ESAT test is also a way for students to assess their academic capability, as to whether they would be suitable for the course.

We recommend students to attempt mock tests and resources early, as this would provide useful information for their academic capability and admissions chance for specific courses.

When will the test results be out?

Test results will be out approximately six weeks after taking the test. There is no pass or fail for ESAT.
