What is ESAT?

The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a test used by Engineering, Natural Sciences, Physics, Aeronautics related programs to assess a candidate’s ability and potential to excel in their courses. The ESAT has replaced the previous ENGAA and NSAA tests. If you are applying for related programs from the below universities, check if the ESAT test is required.

  • University of Cambridge
  • Imperial College London
  • University College London (UCL)

Test format

ESAT is made up of five subtests (individual multiple-choice assessments), including:

  • Mathematics 1 (compulsory)
  • Mathematics 2
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Biology

Apart from Mathematics 1, which is compulsory for all candidates, each candidate will complete two additional multiple-choice assessments depending on which course you are applying to. For example, if you are applying for Engineering, you will likely complete Physics and Mathematics 2.

When is ESAT and when do I register?

There are two ESAT test sittings: one in mid October (booking starts in late July) and one in early January (booking starts in late October).

When should I prepare for ESAT?

The ESAT test is also a way for students to assess their academic capability, as to whether they would be suitable for the course.

We recommend students to attempt mock tests and resources early, as this would provide useful information for their academic capability and admissions chance for specific courses.

When will the test results be out?

Test results will be out approximately six weeks after taking the test. There is no pass or fail for ESAT.
