SAT/ACT - Myths and Misinformation

1. Myth 1: SAT/ACT are no longer important

While a number of universities have rendered the SAT/ACT as being “optional” rather than “required”, it is a grave mistake to underestimate their role in acceptance consideration. Submitting SAT/ACT scores powerfully demonstrates not only the applicant’s eagerness and effort, but also the determination to perform tasks that is beyond and above what is required. Hence setting apart the student - from being a “qualified” applicant to a “good” applicant.

Action: Optimize your acceptance chances - submit high SAT/ACT scores.

2. Myth 2: Treat the first attempt as a trial run - don't worry about the scores
The first set of scores set the tone and act as a starting block for subsequent scores. Low scores for the first attempt mean lowered ceilings for all remaining attempts. Also nothing boosts a student’s confidence and motivation more than good starting scores.
Action: Be well prepared for the first attempt; treat it as though it is the only and the last attempt.

3. Myth 3: SAT is preferred by universities

Historically universities in both coasts prefer the SAT while universities in the “middle” section prefer the ACT. That is no longer true. Take the one that favours the student, in terms of: a) academic strength, b) personal temperament, and c) preference for test taking strategy.
Action: Take SAT and ACT assessment tests, and identify the test that favours the student.

SAT Subject Tests

Subject selection that maximises acceptance chances

Which subject(s) would enhance your academic CV? Understanding their role is crucial to making the best decision. The Subject Tests serve to complement and/or supplement students’ academic CV in the following manner:

1. Complement

  • Taking subjects that are not among the student’s current school subject selection will help to demonstrate breadth of academic proficiency, hence “adding on” to the school report card

2. Supplement

  • Taking subjects that are not showing well on the school report card will help to make up for signs of weakness in the said subjects, hence patching up for “cracks” on the school report card.

SSAT

In addition to school report card, interviews, letters of recommendation, application essays, and extracurricular activity engagements, SSAT score plays a key role in boarding school acceptance consideration. In some cases, it serves as the benchmark for the the initial rounds of applicant elimination. Hence top scores are crucial for successful applications.

When to begin preparation?

Depending on the students’ proficiencies in Reading, Writing (grammar), and Math, it is suggested that students begin the preparation program no less than 6 months prior to the first test date - for the SAT/ACT and SSAT.
