IB Environmental Systems and Societies

IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is a unique, interdisciplinary course that now sits in both Group 3 (Individuals and Societies) and Group 4 (Sciences). With the new 2024 syllabus, it is offered at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) for the first time. The course is built around three core perspectives: Systems, Perspectives, and Sustainability, applying these to global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource management.

The assessment has been modernized to match this new structure. Students no longer face three papers; instead, the focus is on two comprehensive external exams:

Paper 1: A case-study-based exam. You are provided with a booklet of data and information about a specific environmental issue or region and must use your knowledge to analyze and evaluate the situation.

Paper 2: Divided into two sections. Section A consists of short-answer data questions, while Section B (which carries more weight at HL) requires structured essay responses that integrate environmental theory with social and political contexts.

To achieve a 7, you must move beyond "general knowledge" about the environment. The new syllabus demands a systems-thinking approach, where you can explain how a change in one part of an ecosystem (like a carbon sink) creates ripple effects across human societies and economies.

Success in Paper 2 depends on your ability to evaluate. You shouldn't just state that a solution exists; you must argue its strengths and weaknesses from different Environmental Value Systems (EVS), such as ecocentrism versus technocentrism. For HL students, mastering the additional content—including environmental law, ethics, and deeper atmospheric and oceanic modeling—is the key to hitting the top grade boundaries.
