IB French

What is IB French?

In the IB French curriculum, there are two main categories: first language (Language A) and second language (Language B and French ab initio).

For Language A, the course emphasizes literary analysis and contextual understanding. Students are expected to engage deeply with a range of literary texts, exploring the relationship between literature, culture, and society. The aim is to foster critical thinking, appreciation of literary styles, and an ability to construct thoughtful responses.

The second language group (French B and ab initio) focuses on practical language acquisition. Using a topic-based approach, students learn to understand and use French in various everyday and academic contexts. They also explore aspects of Francophone culture to develop intercultural awareness and communication skills, which are key components of the course.

Generally, Language A is more demanding than Language B, and is best suited for native or near-native speakers. Students with strong proficiency in both French and another first language (like English) may take two Language A subjects to qualify as IB bilingual diploma candidates. Such a qualification can be advantageous for top-tier university admissions.

French ab initio is designed for true beginners with little to no prior experience in the language and is only offered at Standard Level (SL). Language B is for students with some prior experience and can be taken at either Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL).

How to get a high score in IB French Language A

Success in French Language A requires excellence in both internal and external assessments, including oral commentary and written analytical work. To score highly, students must demonstrate:

  • A deep understanding of selected literary texts
  • The ability to interpret themes, narrative techniques, and cultural contexts
  • Strong essay-writing skills, with well-structured arguments and rich vocabulary

To prepare effectively, students should read widely, annotate texts thoroughly, analyze sample essays, and engage in regular writing practice. Feedback and revision are essential—working closely with a teacher or tutor can help refine your writing and deepen your literary insights.

How to get a high score in IB French Language B

In French Language B, students are assessed through a combination of oral presentations, listening and reading comprehension, and written expression. High-performing students:

  • Use accurate grammar and varied sentence structures
  • Express opinions clearly and coherently
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness and topic-specific vocabulary

Common challenges include limited vocabulary, basic sentence structures, and difficulty expressing complex ideas. To overcome these, immerse yourself in the language through reading, watching French media, speaking regularly, and practicing writing essays and emails on common IB themes like identity, global issues, and social relationships.
