What is the Common Pre-test?
The Common pre-tests are taken by applicants during year 6 or 7. Usually, the test serves as an initial screening for UK independent schools to gain more information about prospective Year 9 (13+) students. If an applicant is offered a place conditionally at a senior school on the basis of the pre-test results, he/she may still need to sit and pass the Common Entrance 13+ Exam or a Scholarship Exam during Year 8. Some schools have created their own pre-tests, but the format is similar or nearly identical to this ISEB Pre-test.
The test can only be taken once per academic year and takes about 2.5 hours to complete (if in one sitting). It is split into the following sections:
- Verbal reasoning (36 minutes) - Common Words, Antonyms, Word Combinations, Letter Transfer, Number Codes
- Non-verbal reasoning (32 minutes) - Shape Analogies, Classes Like, Horizontal Codes
- English (25 minutes) - Reading Comprehension, Sentence Completion, Spelling and Punctuation)
- Mathematics (50 minutes) - Content is in line with the British National Curriculum topics taught up to the end of Year 5
The tests can either be taken all in one sitting or split up and sat at different times (which is advisable, since taking a 2.5 hour long computer exam in one sitting can be harsh for junior school age students). We recommend our students sit the English and Verbal reasoning papers on Day 1, and then Maths and Non-verbal reasoning papers the next day. This arrangement allows the student to focus on either the language skill or maths based skills on 2 different days. For SEND, EAL candidates, need for adjustments can be assessed and arranged for the test.
