Course Structure and Content

The HL IB Spanish B assessment consists of:

  • Paper 1 (25%): students write a well-organized response on a course theme, ensuring their ideas are well developed, include a suitable tone, and proper register.
In Test 1 you choose one prompt from three tasks provided. The tasks present a variety of audiences, purposes, and contexts (concepts). Each activity is related to a different subject area and associated with three different text types according to the exam instructions. You should choose one task and select the text type most appropriate for it, considering concepts, language, register, and format. You must also develop a coherent and organized response.
  • Paper 2 (50%): It assesses students' reading and listening skills through three texts, including a literary piece, and three audio clips from different Spanish-speaking regions. To prepare, students should practice identifying main ideas, understanding context clues, and familiarizing themselves with various Spanish accents from different regions: Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina.
  • Individual Oral (25%): In the internal assessment (Individual Oral), you must respond to one stimulus: a visual one for SL and a literary passage for HL. You will answer questions about the stimulus presented by your teacher; and need to engage in a conversation in Spanish. For this task, you must use a variety of linguistic structures, registers, and formats appropriate to the intercultural and interpersonal context and audience. You must also understand the topic of the discussion and present an organized response, whether planned or spontaneous, including both implicit and explicit details. Strong preparation in these areas helps students succeed and feel confident in their exams.
