Joyce Wu, Co-Founder and Director

Joyce is a strong believer of mentorship and “life impacts life” (生命影響生命). Her passion for education was apparent from a young age. She took a gap year between high school and university to teach English at a local Beijing school, an experience which solidified her passion for pursuing a lifelong career in education. She has also volunteered as a mentor at the Breakthrough Organisation, the After School Organisation, Maryknoll Convent School as well as the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.

Joyce graduated with a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Cambridge. She received a full scholarship to support her studies. As part of Joyce’s Cambridge education she also spent one year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as an exchange student. Before Cambridge, she attended the Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong and the Maryknoll Convent School.

After graduating Joyce began her career as an analyst at McKinsey and Company, a management consulting firm that advises the senior management of leading companies. After McKinsey she became the co-founder and director of CANA, an education institution that focuses on international education. This year she founded a non-profit branch of CANA in order to provide support for less privileged students in Hong Kong. In addition to her duties at CANA Joyce is also the education column writer for the AM730.

 


Tim Lee, Co-Founder and Director

After graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Tim worked as a computer systems engineer and manager in a Fortune 100 high-tech company. He later became the founder and director of an NGO, providing large corporations and community groups with training and consulting services in areas such as career planning, mediation, communications, and life coaching.

During his teaching career Tim has enabled countless students in both the U.S. and Hong Kong to achieve academic excellence, helping them attain top scores in the SAT, ACT, IB, U.S. and U.K. Mathematics syllabuses. After co-founding CANA Tim was able to follow his passion for holistic education through providing university and high school application guidance, and coaching in areas such as learning and study planning. Tim is a demanding teacher who believes in instructing students not only on what to learn, but also how to learn.

In order to foster collaboration among education institutions, Tim initiated a partnership project with Nanjing University to bring tailor-made university application services to selected students in the Greater Nanjing region.

 


 

Olivia, Co-Founder

Olivia graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.Sc (Hons) in Environmental Science. From a young age she understood the importance of making good choices. The decisions she made during her education in particular opened up many possibilities for her. Upon the completion of the HKCEE, she transferred to Li Po Chun United World College of H.K. for an international education. Though the transition was tough, the two-year experience was an eye-opener. She learned the importance of critical thinking and developed a deep appreciation of the value of knowledge and global perspective. Her drive for academic excellence empowered Olivia to attain 41/45 in the IB Diploma, receive the Dr. Cheng Yu Tung U of T Scholarship, and complete her undergraduate study as the top graduate in her department.

After working in the environmental sector for two years Olivia met Joyce. Joyce’s vision to start an education institution that allows more people to benefit from an international education sparked the same passion in her heart. Olivia believes that every student is different and attempts to tailor her teaching approach to maximize their learning.

To her, education at CANA is relational. It is about walking with the students. It is also about sharing the burden with the parents. Over the years, she has listened to many troubled parents as a friend and has been able to relieve part of their stress through her knowledge of the curricula and teaching experience. Olivia expects all the teachers at CANA to have the same attitude towards their students.

 


Agnes Wen, Director

Agnes obtained a First Class (B.A. Hons) degree in Mathematics at the University of Oxford before switching to a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing, also at University of Oxford. Her master’s enabled her to further explore the application side of maths, particularly on the numerical approaches of Alan Turing’s pattern formation theory. Before university she attended Concord College at Shrewsbury, United Kingdom and Shenzhen Foreign Languages School in Shenzhen, China.

After graduating Agnes joined CANA. She co-edited and helped publish three academic titles for IB maths students with an IB senior examiner. In addition to teaching, Agnes relies on a network of trusted advisers and consultants to help students with various challenges, and remains good friends with her former students.

Currently, Agnes is a Director of CANA. She oversees the Sales and Marketing department, co-leading the UK Admission Consultation Team with Joyce, as well as working on business development. She leads the One-Year International A-Level Course as well as the CANA Elite University Talks, a series of sample lectures and admission seminars delivered by respected academics from prominent universities in the UK.
